Our approach to selecting pork breeding stock

Before starting Tulip Hayes Farm, David and I knew that we could not run a successful farming operation by cutting corners. Our goal was to produce pasture-raised pork whose flavor, tenderness, and marbling spoke for itself. This goal led us directly to the renowned Berkshire heritage breed hog and American Berkshire Association (ABA) breeders. The foundation herd of Tulip Hayes Farm is solely comprised of ABA registered pigs.

Before registering a litter of Berkshire pigs with the ABA, the litter’s sire must be DNA banked and present a negative test result for stress (HAL-1843) and Redement Napole (RN) genes. These genes are known for making meat tough, and overall lowering the quality of pork. Our farm intentionally sought out breeding stock from members of the ABA breeder directory, because the quality of pasture-raised pigs and pork is worth the investment. Tulip Hayes Farm has Berkshire pigs and pasture-raised pork that sets itself apart from pork options.
